Saturday September 15, 2012 at

9 mile Hike, Vineyard tour, tasting and picnic Map and Directions

Tastour is excited to announce a new ‘work hard-play hard combo.’ It’s a 3 hour hike and a 2 hour vineyard tour 9 mile Hike, Vineyard tour, tasting and picnic and tasting via train from Victoria. The best part is at the end of the day, you will be able to look at the hill you’ve climbed from the vineyard!

About the Hike:

A delightful walk taking in woodland, rolling downs, the River Mole and of course Box Hill itself where there are some stunning views to be had from Salomons Memorial as far as Devils Dyke by the South Coast.

Box Hill is located on the North Downs and lies within the Surrey Hills area of Outstanding Natural 9 mile Hike, Vineyard tour, tasting and picnic Beauty as well as being part of the Mole Gap to Reigate Escarpment Site of Special Scientific Interest and has inspired poets like Keats and writers like G.K. Chesterton. As well as it’s natural beauty, Box Hill also plays host to a more recent fort built in the 1890s to help defend England from a possible French invasion and a semi derelict folly from 1815.

9 mile Hike, Vineyard tour, tasting and picnic

We shall be passing by the route for the 2012 Olympics cycling race this summer – at the steepest point, considered to be the best for viewing due toe the speed of the riders and also the steep banks to watch from with 15,000 spectators expected here!

Please note: This walk does have some strong climbs and requires a good level of fitness and as it can be slippery strong and appropriate footwear too.

About the vineyard:9 mile Hike, Vineyard tour, tasting and picnic

Denbies is the largest vineyard in England. It’s won many awards and features on high-end restaurant list such as Claridges.

At the vineyard:

It’s like Disney Land here. The train ride around the vineyard is magical and will be a well deserved rest after the hike.

The tour inside will last 50 minutes and the train rain will also last 50 minutes. Total time at the vineyard is 2 hours

Food:9 mile Hike, Vineyard tour, tasting and picnic

We are bringing a bring and share picnic lunch for the walk.  However there will be time to have a coffee or light bite inside the Cafe at Denbies before the tour.

After the tour:9 mile Hike, Vineyard tour, tasting and picnic

There is an upmarket village pub very close to the train station.  We will stop in for drinks and nibbles before catching the 8pm train.

Transport:

Please note: The tickets are only valid on this train, so you need to be on time please.

We’ll meet at 9:10 am where you can grab a coffee. We’ll leave the meeting spot at 9:20 prompt for the  9:31 train.

We’ll meet in front of WHSmith (no 34) and between this and the stall labelled on the map “A Piece of Cake” no 29 (note, it’s now actually become “Bread Box” at the station): http://www.networkrail.co.uk/documents/For%20Passengers/Station%20Maps/4510_Victoria%20Station%20Map.pdf

Anticipated return to London of approx 8:48

Food

We’ll stop during the walk for a snack lunch so please bring food and drink to share. There will be time for a coffee and light bite before the vineyard tour.  After the tour you are welcome to join us at the pub near Box Hill after the walk.

Distance

The walk is 9 miles and has some hills in it. Hike level: 6/10 Please ensure you’re happy keeping up a reasonable pace over this distance.  The walk should take 3.5 hours, however we are allowing 4.  No hiking experience is required, however, if the thought of walking from Westminster/South Bank Centre to Tower Bridge scares you, then it’s probably not the best walk to start with.

During your 2 hour painting class, you’ll enjoy a guided wine tasting of 4 fine artisan wines.  While waiting for your completed your masterpieces to dry,  you will enjoy a colourful and artistically presented 6 course meal at one of London’s leading secret supper clubs.

Join us to celebrate the art of wine and food!

The Glasses make excellent birthday and wedding presents – perfect for Christmas too!!!

Location:  The venue is the chef’s Home, it is not a public restaurant. The Supper Club is located minutes from the City – near Old Street and Angel Tube.  It is also close to various bus routes. Due to the secret nature of secret supper clubs, the address is sent in the payment confirmation email.

Includes:

Food and Drink: (Valued at £75)

Cocktail and Canapés on arrival

Presentation on Art and Food

4 Fine Wines paired with 6 course dinner

Drink and Draw: (valued at £50)

Cost:

£125 – Only £100, when booked online 1 week in advance

Bon Vivant Members save an additional £15

Note on Quality of Wine:  Wines served will be rare artesian wines, many will cost around £40-60 per bottle on a restaurants wine list.   I have tried to keep the cost low, however, as this is an artistic tasting I thought it best to serve fine wines, which you may not be able to taste any where else!

Note on price: I understand this is a lot of money, especially if you’re new to the group.  Please phone me if you have any questions.

Note on creativity/artistic ability: No art skills are required.  I have purchased stencils for the glasses and even the most shaky hands can produce beautiful hand painted glasses.

Note on food: The ingredients are as far as possible locally sourced: fish comes from Steve Hatt, meat from McKenna Meat and most of the fruit and veggies from the stalls at Chapel Market.  The main course is a choice of Marinated Cod or Poussin (baby Chicken) Please state if you have any diet restrictions when booking and your request will be accommodated.

Hotel:

I’m very pleased with the quality of the hotel (There’s some real 1960′s dumps out there charging £150-200 per night!) We are in the center of Bristol, 20 minutes from Bath.  Hotels in Bath are £200+ and the general feeling of the group was they’d rather spend less on the bed and more on the food and shopping. And I like the idea of people being able to sight see during the down time at the hotel. There will only be a few hours of free time in Bristol, but it should be enough to walk to the suspension bridge or a charming village or to museum/shopping district.

*This is one of the few hotels with 11 rooms available in this price range within 40 miles of Bath.

Onsite: Bar, Restaurant, Swimming Pool and exercise room, very reasonably priced spa treatments. It’s modern, clean and has great reviews online.

About our Walks:

This is one of seven fascinating walks hosted by Joanna.  Our walks focus on exploring famous pubs, restaurants, bars… and let’s not forget historical and modern day epicurous adventurers.  Add in a few fantastic food related shops and a bit of Art History and this afternoon of discovery will give you a taste of an area you will surely want to visit again!

Most importantly, we limit the number to around 15 people.  This allows you to hear the guide and whilst providing a good mix of people to enjoy the experience with.

About our Guide:

Joanna has hosted nearly 30 walks for our group.  Each walk is carefully planned, and updated with quirky news stories and property prices.  If you want to know which house just sold for 17.83 million, where Nigella Lawson lives or the bar Prince Harry was last seen at sharing a £112 cocktail, Joanna will know it. If it’s history your after, you’ll be impressed… did I mention she’s a qualified City of Westminster guide?

2:00pm  Guided walk (TBC) of  Newbury

Gourmet Overnight Trip to the Berkshire's (Downton Abbey)With origins following the Norman Conquest of AD 1066, Newbury is rich in history.   The first mention of Newbury, then Neoburiae, comes from a land grant in 1079. Borough status was granted in 1189 and by 1204 there was a market, corn mill and fulling mill.

We will have free to to explore the market: The majority of the traders today have been on the market for many years, and you can find a wonderful variety of produce including: Fruit and veg, fishmonger, herbs and spices, olives, bread and cakes, cheese, flowers, plants and books. There is also 2 fresh butchers stalls, jams and chutneys, army surplus goods, secondhand books and a range of pet supplies. You will also find clothing, fresh coffee beans from around the world and homemade pies to take away and cook at home. There is fresh Isle of Wight garlic and freshly milled flour for your bread making and once you have done all your shopping, you can relax with a cup of tea and some hot food.

Gourmet Overnight Trip to the Berkshire's (Downton Abbey)

From their website: Our Wheeler’s of St James’s menu (ONE OF MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANTS IN LONDON) is served throughout the Carnarvon Arms, enabling a different choice of dining styles. It is this versatility – the balance of a fine dining ethos and standard set in a laid-back country pub environment – that is so popular with diners.

Our experienced kitchen team source as many ingredients as possible from locally based suppliers to ensure freshness and the shortest route to table, including organic meats and vegetables.

The food is complemented by a carefully chosen wine list of over 40 wines from around the world. Our bar also specialises in hand pulled beer, Marco’s own The Governor and Butcombe Gold, being the most popular. Open all day, the bar also has a range of malt whiskies and after-dinner drinks.

10:30 Walk, followed by Sunday Lunch

Gourmet Overnight Trip to the Berkshire's (Downton Abbey)

About the Sunday Lunch:

This award-winning 17th-century village free house, which stands in fine walking country just below Combe Gibbet and Walbury Hill in the North Wessex Downs, is presided over by organic beef farmers Mary and Bernard Harris. The beamed interior has old photographic prints and open winter fires. Almost everything on the menu is prepared using their own fresh produce; meats are 100% organic and butchered on the premises; all beef is supplied by their organic farm in Inkpen. Fresh pasta and bread are cooked daily on the premises. Even the wine is organic. The menu offers traditional English favourites and classic Italian dishes, such as chicken liver pâté; home-cured bresaola; spaghetti napoletana; meat loaf; braised ox tail; mixed seafood risotto; and ricotta and spinach cannelloni. There is an organic farm shop and butchery attached to the pub (Soil Association registered).

About the Walk:

A GENTLE AND EASY circular pub walk through varied countryside with a choice of pubs. The 17th Century Swan Inn champions organic food with its own farm shop and features in The Good Pub Guideas well as Rick Stein’s Guide to the Food Heroes of Britain.  On route we will also rest and refuel atThe Crown and Garter is a 16th Century brick-built pub recommended in a range of Good Guides for its food, ale and welcome.

You will walk along generally well kept paths and tracks through varied countryside from light woodland to farmland and riverside as well as some short stretches of quiet country lanes.  This is a remote area with little traffic to trouble you.   Depending on the group we can  walk for 1.5 hours to 3 hours.

Gourmet Overnight Trip to the Berkshire's (Downton Abbey)

Return to London around 6 or 7pm

Hotel:

About the Hotel:

Built in the 1800s as a coaching inn providing a stop off for travellers to nearby Highclere Castle, home to the present Lord and Lady Carnarvon, this Grade II listed coaching inn is steeped in history. It was the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who famously opened Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, dying the following year and triggering suggestions of a Mummy’s Curse. Following a recent restoration by Marco Pierre White and his team, The Carnarvon Arms is now a modern country inn, decorated with an eclectic mix of artefacts and art, and with a fine dining ethos set in a relaxed country-pub environment. The kitchen team prepare dishes created by Marco, including potted duck with green peppercorns; fillet of smoked haddock with poached eggs; chicken and leek pie; and roast rump of lamb.  Finish with Eton Mess, sherry trifle or bread-and-butter pudding.

Fine Wine Tasting in Knightsbridge

Saturday March 9, 2013 at 12:00

Fine Wine Tasting in KnightsbridgeMap and Directions

About the tasting:

You’ll be welcomed with a taste of invigorating bubbles, and a delightlightful spread of fleshly sliced meats and fine cheeses (veggie options available).  For around an hour, you’ll have two wine experts enchanting you with tales of the tipple.

Fine Wine Tasting in KnightsbridgeAbout the wine:

The wines will be £10-25 There are some rather unusal finds here, so if you like your wines to be made off the beaten track, you’ll eyes will light up like kids in a candy shop at the selection!

Note on the change of venue:

I tried to phone most of those pre-paid today; however, instead of leaving a long-winded message, I thought I’d write instead.

In London, it seems that there are an endless number of new restaurants, and places for gourmet experiences. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult for gourmet deli’s to stay in business. We had a wonderful time at our last event and it’s with great regrets (and big shock) that Market Quarter has closed down this week.

One of the things I love most about London and Tastour for that matter, is that whenever one place shuts, it opens the door to explore something new.

I have been working away today to find a replacement and I’m confident that we will have an equally fine time at nearby Jeroboams. They even have a wonderful warm fireplace in their cellar.

About the shop:

Jeromboams is an institution in London.  They started as a Wine Merchant importing fine wine in the 1800′s and have been going strong since. The combination of historical oak pannel, fire places and fine wine makes this the dream relaxing afternoon

(I just ordered the truffled salt.  The aroma is amazing and a great quick cheat for pastas!)

After the tasting:

When I recently changed this event, and noted the Restaurant Racine, a member emailed and said ‘fine choice, one of my favourites in London.’  Enough said, right? Well this has been voted on of the Best French Bistro’s this side of the channel.  The have a set course lunch for £15 – and a good selection ala carte.

miniTASTING Experience…

Written by
Sarah, Tastourian
Last Tuesday, I spent the evening meeting and talking to grapes…am I crazy? Was I trolleyed?!

Well, definitely not nuts, nor were the 50 others who were there.

It was Tastour’s monthly social drinks – as we went in, we all chose a grape personality and got a sticker. I plumped for ‘Pinot Grigio – I’m TRENDY – I’m in all the bars, not always cheap, but I am EASY…drinking’. It was hilarious! I met so many grape people!!! I also met up with a few old friends in the guise of Malbec ‘Rich and chococately, I am every girl’s dream’ and Marsanne ‘Some consider me to be the finest in the world. Learning about the grape styles was fun. I even met my match – I mean, I met a chap who’d also chosen Pinot Grigio. Did this mean we were soul-mates – Mr and Miss Pinot Grigio – both trendy and playful?! We’ll see!

Although it was a social drinks night, there was also a mini-wine tasting – rather aptly named a Tastour Tease! So not just a great night with some fun people, but I learned something as well! At the start of the evening, in small groups, you were guided through your first glass of wine – this glass of wine was free when you arrived. We learnt a few tricks of trade about aromas. The guide said that we’ll be tackling a different subject every month. But it’s whet my appetite – they’re running a Champagne tasting on 24th April and I’m going to sign up tonight. The tasting was only hour, so there was plenty of time to get mingling, and test out my new-found smelling skills! All in all, a grape night!!

Royal Ascot learn about horse racing & luxury Nino Franco Prosecco

Hello Tastourians!!

Royal Ascot has become a Tastour tradition. This is our 5th year!!! Several members join us every year, making it clear that this is a fantastic event and well worth the money.

This year’s event is fully booked.  Hope you can make it next year!

Last year’s addition of an exclusive lunch and Prosecco reception inside the inner racetrack was a huge hit.

And this year, it’s going to be even better!

What is Royal Ascot?

And why do 300,000 attend this festival each year?

It’s

* The most popular and prestigious horse racing event of the year
* A piece of British Heritage. This is the ultimate British experience
* A chance to see the Queen and rub shoulders with her friends
* A great day out and a good excuse to get dressed up
* An experience you will never forget
* The people and hat watching
* THE social gathering of the year!

Why come with the group

* You’ll learn how to bet on the horseys & the history of hats
* We’ll drink and learn about Nino Franco, the Pearl of Prosecco

* You’ll receive inside tips on how to get the most of the day
* Our carefully arranged meeting points means you can explore and rejoin the group as you wish
* Your host will queue for an hour to reserve your spot so you won’t miss afternoon tea
* Meet others with good taste and enjoy good company

About your ticket

The Grandstand Admission ticket at Royal Ascot provides similar access facilities around the racecourse as it does for those with Royal Enclosure tickets. (Silver Ring tickets are greatly restricted.)

The Grandstand Admission ticket provides excellent facilities and viewing areas at ground level and lawn level. Grandstand Admission customers can watch the Royal Procession and the racing action from the lawns in front of the Grandstand. The Pre-Parade Ring, Parade Ring and track are both within a short walking distance, by crossing the Concourse in the main Grandstand.

Other highlights of a Grandstand Admission ticket include:

* Over 1,000 free seats are available from which to view the racing.
* Big Screen TVs on the Plaza Lawn.
* Military Bands performing in the Parade Ring before the Royal Procession each day.
* Traditional sing-along around the Bandstand after racing on each day. Free song books provided.
* Food outlets selling a variety of value for money cuisine options.

*And the best part is, you get to mix with the Royal Enclosure. To obtain a ticket to the Royal Encloser you must be recommended by two people who have attended for more than four years.

Grandstand Admission Dress Code

Ladies with a Grandstand Admission ticket are required to dress in a manner appropriate to a smart occasion. (Garden Party or Wedding Wear) Many wear hats although this is not compulsory.

Gentlemen in the Grandstand Admission area must wear a shirt and tie, preferably with a suit or jacket. Sports attire, jeans and shorts are strictly forbidden.

Hats

Just a warning, if you don’t wear a hat, you will wish you did! It is fun and all you really need is a simple feather from Accessorise.

We will be hosting a Pre-Ascot Hat hire party which will teach you the history of the British hat making industry and show you where to buy a £300 looking hat for £30!

Food on the day

Sandwiches, Salads and all the fixings will be available for purchase (next to the Champagne bar!)  As well as various other concessions, such as hamburgers and greasy spoon type food to soak up the alcohol.

We will have a light lunch and several glasses of Nino Franco Prosecco before going into the betting area.

Royal Ascot learn about horse racing & luxury Nino Franco Prosecco

About Nino Franco Prosecco

Nino Franco Prosecco is one of the oldest wineries in the prestigious Valdobbiadene.  It is highly regarded amongst wine experts with Robert Parker scoring the Primo 91 points and other labels receiving 87, and 89 points.  And if you know Parker, he only scores this high for those wines that are truly exceptional. I can’t think of a better way to start the day!

Guest

This is an experience to share. Please invite your friends, the more the merrier!

Feedback from last year’s Ascot Tastour
“It was the most British day I’ve had since moving here a year ago. I saw the queen and won a little cash and got totally swept up in the people watching. ” Lisa

“A mammoth feat of organisation by Kelly made for a great day out – thanks!” Amber

Note from the organiser

I realise that this is a large amount of money to commit, especially if you are new to the group.
As the upfront cost of this event are so high, I nearly didn’t host this event in 2013, however, I’ve received several emails from past attendees and some from those who were unable to make it in previous years encouraging me to host this event. It is worth every penny and should be on every experience seekers ‘list to do before the die’. There’s horseracing… and there’s Royal Ascot.  This event is truly special.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to phone me. Kelly 0791 905 3064 or email info@tastour.co.uk

Hello,

UPDATE:

Ascot is only a few months away.  I hope you’re as excited as I am!

I had an email this morning with a few questions and I thought you may be wondering the same.

Do I have to bet, or gamble to go to Ascot?

No… Personally I go for the hats.

Royal Ascot learn about horse racing & luxury Nino Franco Prosecco

But we have had a few big winners

Royal Ascot learn about horse racing & luxury Nino Franco Prosecco

It says no food on the website, where are you having your picnic?

Our picnic is held inside the race track car park (which is more expensive than the normal car park, and means we take two smaller coaches as larger coaches are not allowed) The atmosphere is wonderful and it’s great to see the track from the inside, as when you’re on the inside you wonder what’s it like to be in the centre (or at least I did!). It’s a unique experience.  This is also where we do the wine tasting.  The Ascot website is referring to the area where they sell their own food and drink (once you go past the ticket barriers and are effectively on the outside of the race track.)  Whereas our picnic is literally on the inside of the track.  I hope this makes sense!

Royal Ascot learn about horse racing & luxury Nino Franco Prosecco

What’s included in the light lunch?

Last year we did sandwiches, canapés such as smoked salmon and beef with horseradish and various other things. Including VEGGIE options. If I’m allowed to say, a picnic lunch from the track cost £40 per person and this blew it away.  Each year we do something different, and I will not know what will be on the menu until a week before. However, I do know that I aim to please and you will not be disappointed. Although I should say that although there are tables table cloths & flowers it’s clearly a picnic not a pop-up restaurant.

How much wine will be served?

This year we are tasting Nino Franco Prosecco.  It’s an incredibly high-end Processo, with some bottles costing £35, which   There will be several small glasses of their amazing Rustico, which retails for £18 per bottle.  We’re fairly generous as we want to kickstart the day Royal Ascot learn about horse racing & luxury Nino Franco Prosecco In previous years people have complained there was too much, or at least more than they were expecting.

Once inside, will I be able to find the group?

Yes, I’ve carefully plotted out meeting points (which improve each year) and it’s easy to find us through out the day.  This means you can wonder off and rejoin us.

Royal Ascot learn about horse racing & luxury Nino Franco Prosecco

What’s the most traditional part of Ascot?

Either seeing the Queen

Royal Ascot learn about horse racing & luxury Nino Franco Prosecco

Or the singing at the Bandstand – at the end.

What’s the after party like?

It’s crazy.  It’s fun.  Did I mention it’s crazy?  It’s about 1,000 people all having a blast – high on the air of Ascot.  Not to be missed.

Heavy on Flavour… Light on the pocketbook

One of the wonderful things about Prosecco is that you don’t have to sacrifice flavour for price. You can pick up a bottle of bubbles for at least half the price of Champagne.  And your friends will even thank you for it!  In our Introduction to Champagne and Sparkling wine speedTASTING, nearly everyone prefers Prosecco. Whilst only half of people preferred Champagne.

If you thought all Prosecco was sweet, think again. Although it is characteristically fruiter than Champagne, it is mainly sold with a dry dosage!  Dosage rhymes with massage, and it a whole ‘nother blog post, so I’ll just leave you with… read the label.  Yep, just one little word will let you in on the bottle’s secret – the sweetness of the wine…. BRUT (means it will be dry!)

At whatever price point, there are two key words to look for on the label to ensure you are buying a quality prosecco:

The code word on the label that you want to be sure to look for is DOCG.  What is this, you ask?  Well, I shall tell you!  DOCG or ‘Controlled Designation of Origin Guaranteed’ is  a quality assurance label.  The DOCG came about after the DOC (‘Designation of Origin’) was considered to be handed out far too liberally.  The main difference between the two (besides price!) is that DOCG-labeled wines are tested by government-licensed personnel, approved, then bottled and stamped with a government number.  What does this mean for consumers?  You’re guaranteed to be getting top-notch quality.

And the third word to seek out is Valdobbiadene.  This is the only region where Prosecco is legally allowed to be made.  It’s just like Cava or Champagne, it now has a ‘trademark’ protecting it’s name.

My favourite recommendation comes from one of Italy’s top producers of this well-known sparkling wine.   Nino Franco, is located in the heart of the Prosecco DOC, has been making wine since 1919. They are considered to be one of the oldest Prosecco producers and  unlike many of their peers, the Franco family owns their own vineyards.  This means that all decisions on viticulture are solely theirs to make: the fruit can be picked, transported and crushed at their own discretion.  A they focus on lower yeilds their Italian competitors, the quality is undeniably higher.  I recently had the pleasure of meeting Anthony Franco, and I must say, is was tastefully charming!  And I look forward to taking him up on the offer to stay at their vineyards, sounds like an excellent Tastour!

My top pick for the summer:

Nino Frano Rustico DOC Brut: Start with a scent of white flowers and lemon zest, but fall into the pleasantly complex flavour.  Though a dry bottle, this wine offers tiny bubbles and a green apple taste that lingers on the tongue, making it impossible not to think of summer.  Redolent of white peach, mint and pear, this wonderfully popular wine is one to try!

Price = £18 but on offer for £14 here
